05:37 pm - Art: Elf Stickers
For anyone who has interest in either my art or Dungeons & Dragons (Big Bang Theory fic fans?), Paul of BlogofHolding.com is doing a kickstarter to create and distribute a cool poster which encapsulated the rules of random dungeons as a dungeon itself, and one of the bonuses is dreamy elf stickers by me!

10:52 pm - Army Cadet Fact-Checking Beta?

Hello, flist! I've been absent for awhile working on an original fic. To that end, I have a strange and specific beta request.

Is there anyone reading this who has any experience with Army Cadets, JROTC, ROTC, or any form of U.S. Army education/training? And wouldyou/that person be able and interested to read a YA story for fact checking?

More details upon request!

Please let me know at zelempa at gmail!

Thanks!

10:43 am - First sentence meme
Pick up the nearest book to you. Turn to page 45. The first complete sentence describes your sex life in 2012.

Figured this was going to be creepy because, as it happened, the nearest nonkindle physical book to me was Friends Forever #1: Kristy's Big News, but it's actually fine: "On a small table, a cluster of cacti of every shape and color bristled."

I don't know how to interpret that.

12:43 pm - TSRBB
I've signed up to do art for [info]sentinelbigbang's Reverse Bang (sign-ups are going on right now if you are interested!)I've never done a Reverse Bang before, but it seems like fun, art and prompt rolled up into one! Any advice on what constitutes an inspiring illustration to start from, either from artists or writers?  Originally posted at http://zelempa.dreamwidth.org/87409.html (comment count unavailable comments)

11:29 am - Obligatory annual Kiva plug
If you're interested in joining Kiva, now is a great time! There's a promotion where you can make a free loan: http://kiva.org/ladieshomejournal

If you haven't seen me mention it before, Kiva's a website where you can make microloans of $25 apiece to farmers, crafters, shopkeepers, and other small business owners in developing nations to give them a leg up out of poverty. I use it constantly. I am not employed by nor paid by them in any way. :) Unlike regular loans, you don't earn interest on the loans you give out. But unlike a charity donation, you get the money back. I love getting my loans paid back and using them to fund more and more loans!

There's also a fandom lending team if you want your loan to count toward making fandom look generous and great.

06:34 pm - So much for my Happy Endings
In THEORY I like that the show Happy Endings has a main, likeable gay character whose sexuality is neither ignored nor made his whole personality (bonus points for his broad Chicago accent), but it sort of seems like none of the writers know a gay person? I'm not saying it's unrealistic to have a sporty broseph who calls his boyfriends "dude"--that's great--and I don't care that all his friends are apparently straight people, since everyone's entire group of friends being the other characters in the show is a standard TV trope. It's the little things.

There's a joke in one episode (I forget which or who it's about) where Penny is spinning a flowery fantasy in which she makes love with some celebrity while looking into his eyes, and Max says he has the same fantasy, "except not looking into his eyes, for obvious reasons." It actually took a second for me to get that joke. It's the "for obvious reasons" that gets me--without it, it could possibly be a moment of character-based comedy on the types of fantasies that Penny vs. Max find appealing rather than a supposedly sexually successful gay man perpetuating the bizarre straight stereotype that gay men only ever do it from behind.

It's hard for me to tell if I kind of like this show even though it's terrible or kind of hate it even though it's fine. Either way, I think it's time to stop.

05:42 pm - Holiday Wishes meme
Step One

- Make a post (public, friends locked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two

- Surf around your friendslist (or friends friends, or just random journals, or [community profile] holiday_wishes/[community profile] wishlist) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My List )
